The Animal Collective: Merriweather Post Pavillion

Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavillion

This album from the Animal Collective seems to be on a lot of top 10 lists of 2009. (See Pitchfork ). Personally, I'm not yet sold on the entire album. Maybe I have to listen to it some more? That said, track number four, "Sumertime Clothes", is a great song:

Three Videos Showing the Depth in Music

I think we often forget how music affects us and shapes our lives. A few bars of music can flood us with memories and change our state of being. Consider that people actually dedicate their entire lives to studying it. Like so many other ways of knowing; mathematics, physics, philosophy; the layers are endless... eventually leading to a mystery that goes beyond the logic of rational thought

Below are three videos that touch on the depth in music:

The first is a light and humorous demonstration of how four simple chords are used as the creative building blocks for numerous hit songs. In the second video, Bobby Mcferrin shows how music seems to be cross-culturally embedded into the human experience. In the last video, Tool takes a mathematical concept often used to describe nature and uses it in a song that is, essentially, about evolution: cool!

Jamie T. : Panic Prevention and Kings and Queen

JamieT-panicpreventionJamieT Kings and Queens

I got both Jamie T albums; 2007's "Panic Prevention" and 2009's "Kings and Queens"; a little while ago but just got around to giving them a listen today. I like both albums a lot; it's a little bit of rap, rock and brit pop all mixed up.

Check out this song called Eath, Wind and Fire, from the "Kings and Queens" album:

Gogol Bordello - Playing Free Show in Whislter for Telus Ski and Snowboard Festival

Gogol Bordello supposedly put on one of the best live shows you will ever see. They are playing in Bellingham on April 22 and then doing a free live show the next day in Whistler on April 23. I think I'll try and hit both shows. (Check out their "Artist's Statement" below the video)

Gogol Bordello Artist Statement

Gogol Bordello’s task is to provoke audience out of post-modern aesthetic swamp onto a neo-optimistic communal movement towards new sources of authentic energy.

With acts of music, theatre, chaos and sorcery Gogol Bordello confronts the jaded and irony-diseased. Our treatment of the traditional material is free with us, but is not irony-driven and thus real. Our theatre is chaotic and spontaneous and because of that is alarming and response provoking.

From where we stand it is clear that World’s cultures contain material for endless art possibilities and new mind-stretching combinations, raw joy and survival energy. We chose to work with Gypsy, Cabaret and punk traditions. It’s what we know and feel. And so many more are possible that can make the beloved statement of post-modernism “everything is been done” sound as an intellectual error.

The troubadours of neo-authentic are comin as a trans-global Art syndicate family that has never been witnessed before. PARTY!
