The Blind Side

I watched “The Blind Side” the other night. As fiction it would be a great story but the fact that it’s a true story makes it even better. It brought tears to my eyes a couple of times.

I never saw Meryl Streep in “Julia” but I heard, from a technical acting perspective, she was better than Sandra Bullock and that’s probably true. Nonetheless, I can see why Bullock beat Streep for the best actress award. It’s hard to explain, but her performance had a power to it that seemed to transcend technical acting. I think she’s still in the negative as far as bad movies / good movies but this one negates at least four of the bad ones.

Below is a real news story on the actual family portrayed in the movie. Don't watch it until you see the movie first… it will ruin some of the surprises.

The Greatest Opening Scene in The History of Modern Film?

If you don't recognize this opening in the first couple of minutes you need to watch this film (either again or for the first time).

This clip is from Francis Ford Coppola's masterpiece "Apocalypse Now". In a span of a few years, Coppola directed "The Godfather I and II" and "Apocalypse Now", and also produced George Lucus' breakout film "American Graffiti". Talk about artistic innovation. To actually create Apocalypse took incredible vision and perseverance. The film was besieged by problems "including typhoons, nervous breakdowns, the firing of Harvey Keitel, Martin Sheen's heart attack, extras from the Philippine military leaving in the middle of scenes to go fight rebels, and an unprepared Marlon Brando with a bloated appearance (which Coppola attempted to hide by shooting him in the shadows). It was delayed so often it was nicknamed Apocalypse When?." ( Wikipedia )

Drug use was also rampant among cast members. In this famous scene with Charlie Sheen, Sheen was so wasted, he could hardly stand:

Who is Banksy?

Banksy is a street artists; a legendary street artist. Actually, I think it's fair to say he has transcended the "street" artist moniker and should be thought of as a genius artist in his own right. This is a guy who traveled to Israel and risked being shot so he could graffiti the wall/barrier that Israel built to fence in Palestine.

Of course the best way to know Banksy is to check out his art.

Banksy Film - Exit Through The Gift Shop (With Torrent)

In my last post I talked about the street artist Banksy. Well, he recently was the subject of a fantastic movie / documentary called "Exit Through The Gift Shop". It starts out as a film about street art and artists, particularly Banksy, but the movie ends up being more about the guy making the movie who eventually (with some prodding from Banksy) becomes a street artist himself.

The movie is smart and funny; I would even call it genius.
